Building the Future

Criticisms still exist but the crucial role the Seychelles Marketing Board (SMB) plays in the economic well-being of the country is being understood. Set up in 1985 and dedicated to the economic growth of Seychelles and the welfare of its citizens, the SMB's main aims were to:

  • provide secure long-term supplies of essential goods at stable economic prices;
  • seek and develop opportunities to increase Seychelles' export earnings;
  • compete, where appropriate, with the private sector to provide fairly-priced goods and services to consumers;
  • seek and develop business opportunities in fields where it has a competitive advantage or where it can benefit community interests;
  • respond quickly and efficiently to customer's needs for quality service and quality products.

According to the SMB's Managing Director, Mr Mukesh Valabhji, these aims have been achieved (see centre pages). SMB is today the country's biggest employer and has since its inception paid dividends in excess of R20 million a year to the government. Its turnover is around 50 percent of the government's budget, approximately R60 million a year.
