How do I reconfigure my NetBox account?

For security reasons we prefer that you make all account changes yourself.
There are three ways.

1. From the website http://www.netbox.com
Enter the "Customer Home Page" you will need your login name and password.

2. Via telnet telnet to netbox.com
choose 'configure'

3. Email
Fill out the form from nbconfig@netbox.com Send an email to this address. It will return the change configuration form.

This method is significantly slower as it requires customer service To do the set up. It is most useful for our international clients who do not Have web or telnet access.

How do I change my Password?

To change your password send a message with your OLD PASSWORD, the NEW PASSWORD you are requesting, and your LOGIN (account name) and the change will be made, typically within 24 hours.

We have elected not to provide scripts to permit you to change your password yourself. The reason? Too many clients forget their password and when that happens recovery of the account is impossible.

Please remember to make the password at least 6 characters long and include at least both upper and lower-case characters or a combination of letters and digits. Don't hesitate to ask any further questions and thank you for your continuing support of NetBox communication services.
Send the request for password change to
support@netbox.com
or
doliver@netbox.com

How do I use your secure server?

Just use the reference https:// your path.
There is no additional charge for use of our secure server.

As an example, use your ssl compatible browser to go to "https://www.netbox.com/". It contains a secure version of our sign-up form. Like CGI scripts, we will need to put the forms in the directory (this is a matter of access to the directory, not restriction).

You reference the page and scripts with the "https". In order for the scripts to process the information securely, you need to include the full, secure URL like:

"ACTION="https://netbox.com/cgi-bin/ivor.cgi"" in your FORM tags. If you don't, the user gets a message that the submission is not secure...

Everything else is the same as normal web stuff.

Why does my email come back with the subject: No Real-To: found?

NetBox offers proprietary built in address header replacement software. This allows you to use your NetBox account as a permanent address. Sit at your local ISP or work and send mail from that machine and NetBox will replace the FROM field [if you are at work then your address would be you@work.com ] with the FROM field you@netbox.com

To do this mail has to reach our server and we need to confirm that it is really you. So, to do this you a) write to yourself at NetBox from your registered address and b) put on the first line of the message Real-To: realperson@wherever.com

Whenever a message comes into NetBox our server checks a) is it from your registered address AND does it have a Real-To on the first line of the message. If BOTH conditions are met, then we replace the header.

If the first line of the message does not contain Real-To: with the proper format, well...

Here is a bit more from our users guide. The full guide is available in the customer section of the website.

Using Real-To: (and Real-Cc: , Real-Bcc: ) to forward outbound mail The Real-To: feature is a unique and powerful tool for managing electronic mail. Real-To: is the technique for rerouting outbound messages through your NetBox. It works like this:

Every message that arrives at the NetBox is checked to see if it originated at an address registered for that account. If the message did originate from a registered address it is checked for the existence of the Real-To: (and then Real-Cc: and Real-Bcc). If the field is found the message is redirected to the address(es) in the field(s) after having all identifying headers rebuilt.

This process effectively masks the identity of the registered address, making messages look as though they originated at a NetBox account, and presenting a coherent and integrated electronic identity to your correspondents, regardless of what actual account or address was used to originate the message.

Outbound message rerouting will work ONLY when the message originates from one of the forwarding addresses in the NetBox account configuration. This is to prevent someone from rerouting messages through another's NetBox and forging fraudulent mail.

It is easy to use the Real-To: feature. In the first line of the body of your message type:
Real-To: name@abc.com
followed by a blank line where name@abc.com is the address (or addresses, separated by commas) you want the message delivered to. Send the message to your NetBox and it will be processed and rerouted to the destination address(es) in the Real-To: field.

A few rules about using the Real-To method [also please see examples below]:

The Seven Rules of Real-To, 1> The "Real-To: " MUST appear on the first line of the body of the message and MUST begin in the first column of the first line.

2> "Real-To: " is case sensitive. Although the software is somewhat tolerant, if your NetBox receives a message from one of your registered addresses without a "Real-To: " or if the Real-To: is not entered correctly, you will receive a message from NetBox telling you "Real-To: not found."

3> There must be at least one space following the colon (":") before the first destination address.

4> Only include valid e-mail address(es) in the Real-To:, that is the "username@domain.com". For example, my address is POMaster@NetBox.com. If you add other information to this line, the extra information must be surrounded by quotes with the Internet address outside the quotes. The actual Internet address is to the right of the quoted information and issurrounded by angle brackets ("<>"). See examples.

5> Multiple Real-To: addresses are permitted. Each destination address must be separated by a comma (","). There is no limit to the number of addresses included in a Real-To: but the field should not exceed a total of 250 characters.

6> Real-Cc: and Real-Bcc: (Carbon copy and Blind carbon copy, respectively) functions are both supported and may be invoked on the lines below the Real-To: field and always after Real-To:. The same rules apply to Real-Cc:and Real-Bcc as to Real-To: (at least 1 space after ":", only valid Internet addresses, comma separated addresses, starting on the first column of the line, less than 250 total characters)

7> There must be at least one blank line between the Real-To: (or Real-Cc: or Real-Bcc;) and the start of the actual message.

Real-To: examples

Suppose your primary access account is at CompuServe with the address 77632.832@compuserve.com, and you want to send a message to somebody@aol.com with the return address of your NetBox account, you@NetBox.com. The headers and format in your original message would look like this:

To: you@NetBox.com
From: 77632.832@compuserve.com
Subject: Neat
New Service - NetBox!
Real-To: somebody@aol.com (on the 1st line of msg.)
(at least 1 blank line)
Hi Somebody...

Check it out and have a nice day,
NetBox receives this, recognizes your CompuServe address as a registered address, and rebuilds the message headers so that somebody@aol.com would actually get this message:
To: somebody@aol.com
From: you@NetBox.com
Subject: Neat New Service - NetBox!

Hi Somebody...

Check it out and have a nice day,

Bye
When "somebody" hits the reply button to respond, "you@NetBox.com" will automatically be inserted in the "To:" address. Their message will then be sent to your NetBox with the "From:" header containing the address of your correspondent.

NetBox adds a "Real-To:" to all your redirected mail so that you can use it for replying through NetBox [with most mailers you can forward the message to your NetBox account and the Real-To: will already be available].

Examples of Real-To::

Real-To: POMaster@NetBox.com
Works - only the Internet address on the "Real-To" line.

Real-To: POMaster@NetBox.com, Sales@NetBox.com
Works - two Internet addresses on the "Real-To" line separated by a comma.

Real-To: Jim
Fails - no domain given so cannot be delivered.

Real-To:POMaster@NetBox.com
Fails - no space between the "Real-To:" and address information.

Real-To: POMaster@NetBox.com
Real-Cc: Sales@NetBox.com
Works - both addresses configured properly with space between ":" and the Internet address.

Real-To: "P.O. Master"
Works - quotes around the non-Internet address, angle brackets around the Internet address, and no space between the two.

Real-To: P.O. Master
Fails - no quotes around the non-Internet address.

Real-To: "P.O. Master "
Fails - Internet address is inside the quotes where it cannot be found for deliver.

Real-To: "P.O. Master"
Real-Cc: Sales@NetBox.com
Works - Both properly formatted even though styles are mixed.

Send yourself a test and try it!

The following example illustrates how to send yourself a test message that looks like it originated from your NetBox, [here "YourAcct" is your NetBox login name and "MyHome@provider.com" is your primary ISP account that you use to access the Internet].

-------- Self-Addressed Sample/Test 1

To:
YourAcct@NetBox.com
From: MyHome@provider.com
Subject: Test of NetBox
account
==============Start of Message===================
Real-To: MyHome@provider.com

Hello me!

Bye
==============End of Message=====================
NOTE: If you do not put the "Real-To: " field in the first column of the first line of this message, you will get a message from NetBox saying "No Real-To Field Found: ".
Here is a more complete illustration showing additional options.

Self-Addressed Sample/Test 2

To: YourAcct@NetBox.com ---you, your new NetBox address
cc: services@NetBox.com ---auto responder, NetBox price list
From: ---your mail program will fill in
Subject: NetBox Test ---or any other subject
==============Start of Message===================
Real-To: MyHome@provider.com --you will receive the message
Real-Cc: doliver@netbox.com ---will also receive a copy
Real-Bcc: tkiller@netbox.com ----will receive a blind copy

Real-Fax: 012 345-6789 ---- your dedicated fax line

---!!! line must be blank !!!
Hello Me!

This test message shows how NetBox software is used to make it appear
that a message sent from my current ISP comes from my NetBox address. The Real-To: feature forwards this message to my account, an auto
responder replies with a price list, a copy of this note also goes
to Dennis Oliver, VP of Operations at NetBox, a blind copy will go
to Tom Killilea, NetBox POmaster and finally, because I am using
the "Real-Fax: " feature and have the fax option authorized, a
facsimile copy will be delivered to my dedicated fax line at the office. Best regards to myself Me

How do I reconfigure if I do not have web or telnet access?

CONFIGURING YOUR NETBOX

In order to change the current status and/or base address(es) of your NetBox account, please fill in the following form and return it to us by e-mail. The easiest way is to use the "reply" function on most mailing programs and use this to fill in the your new preferences inside the brackets ("[]").

Since this is an UNSECURE method, we will be sending you a request for confirmation via e-mail to your current base address. No changes will be made unless you return this confirmation within 24 hours. You can also print out this form and fax it to NetBox at 1-415-324-0998.

Since this is not the most secure method to update your account, we highly recommend that you make changes by telnet if you can. You can telnet to NetBox.com and use your account name and password to logon to our server. Follow the instructions on the menu to change your preferences.

For your convenience, this form is also available by the World Wide Web at http://www.netbox.com/NBConfig.htm. You should keep in mind that, even with "secure" web servers, this route is not much more secure than e-mail.

If you have any questions or comments, we encourage you to get in touch with us by e-mail at POMaster@NetBox.com, by phone at 1-800-9NetBox (1-800-963-8269 - 1-650-961-4880 outside the US) or by facsimile at 1-650-324-0998.
