John J. McDonough, 60, graduated with honors from the University of Notre Dame in 1958 and passed the CPA examination in Illinois shortly thereafter.Mr. McDonough has had extenisve experience in finance and general management in several industries. Through 1970, he was one of the prinicipal officers of Litton Medical Products, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Litton Industries. From 1970 through 1975, he was Vice President and Treasurer of American Television and Communications Corporation, the large cable television operation now owned by Time-Warner, Inc. In 1974, he joined Blount, Inc (ASE) as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. In that position, his primary responsibility was to establish and execute a strategy to improve the Comany's financial position through acquisistions and divestitures. This effort was highly successful and was recognized by the Board and Management Group of Blount as well as the financial community.
While with Blount, Mr. McDonough continued his involvement in cable television through a series of personal investments. In 1979, he left Blount to found National Tele-Communications Services, Inc., (NTS), a cable television company later merged with Harte-Hanks Communications (then NYSE). NTS expanded rapidly through both internal growth and acquisitions of franchises and operating systems. At the time of sale, NTS was building or operating 23 systems service over 41,000 basic subscribers in Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Virginia.
Prior to founding GENDEX, Mr. McDonough served as Senior Vice president, Finance, of the Newell Companies, Inc. (NYSE) of Freeport, Illinois. He now serves on Newell's Board of Directors.
Mr. McDonough was Charman and Chief Executive Officer of GENDEX Corporation prior to its merger with DENTSPLY in June 1994. Subsequent to the merger, Mr. McDonough was the Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of DENTSPLY International, Inc. until February 1995, then served as Vice Chairman of DENTSPLY though Octover 1995. DENTSPLY founded in 1899, manufactures dental supplies and equipment for the worldwide dental market. DENTSPLY is the world's leading manufacturer of artificial teeth and consumable dental products such as impression materials, restorative materials, endodontic materials and disposable dental products. GENDEX, a division of DENTSPLY, designs, develops, manufactures and markets x-ray systems, handpieces, cutting instruments, film holders, film mounts and various support equipment for the dental market in addition to x-ray systems, x-ray tubes and accessories for the mediacal market. GENDEX is the leading manufacturer and distributor of dental x-ray equipment, handpieces and cutting instruments in the United States. Mr. McDonough founded GENDEX in April 1983.
Mr. McDonough is currently President and Chief Executive Officer of McDonough Capital Company LLC, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of SoftNet Systems Inc.
Mr. McDonough is a former member of the Financial Accounting Standards Advisory Council. He also serves as an advisor or board member of several civic and charitable organizations.
Born in Chicago, Mr. McDonough and his wife, Marilyn, reside in Lake Forest, Illinois. Their five children and four grandchildren reside in Chicago, IL and Austin, TX.
