CASIO PHONEMATE INTRODUCES ANOTHER MARKET FIRST: 900 MHZ DIGITAL SPREAD SPECTRUM CORDLESS PHONE WITH CALL WAITING/CALLER ID DISPLAY, ROCKWELL TECHNOLOGY!

CP-850 from Industry Innovator Delivers Unsurpassed Range, Security and Clarity, Coupled with Built-In Call Waiting Caller ID and Intelligent Power Management

TORRANCE, Calif. (October, 1997) -- For this year's holiday gift sensation, look no further than the CP-850 cordless telephone from Casio PhoneMate, due in retail stores this fall. With the CP-850, the convenience and mobility of a cordless phone is maximized through superior range, security and clarity -- and made all the more useful with a Call Waiting Caller ID display that lets you manage incoming calls while on the go.

Casio PhoneMate is the first company to combine the most advanced technologies in today's telephones in a single package: a 900-megahertz (MHz) cordless phone with Rockwell's digital spread spectrum (DSS) technology, featuring "intelligent power management." With Call Waiting Caller ID, the handset LCD allows users to identify callers from any location in the home or small office, even while a call is in progress.

"The CP-850 is the ultimate in convenience," said Stephen Knuth, president, Casio PhoneMate. You can literally take the dog for a walk and take your phone with you - and know who's calling as you carry on your conversation with the first calling party. Combining Call Waiting Caller ID offers a significant enhancement over the older Caller ID technology, especially in a cordless phone with this kind of range and clarity."

"This collaborative effort by two market leaders has resulted in a superior solution for consumers, with tangible benefits in areas that matter most in personal and business communications," said Scott Bibaud, Product Manager, Wireless Communications Division, Rockwell Semiconductor Systems. "Rockwell's 900 MHz digital spread spectrum technology, integrated with the next-generation Casio PhoneMate cordless offerings like the CP-850, gives consumers the features they ask for, including range, clarity and security."

The Power of DSS

Of all 900 MHz technologies, Casio PhoneMate's Rockwell-based DSS offers superior performance advantages. It provides the longest range of any cordless phone technology, including 900 MHz Analog and Digital - about 4,000 feet under ideal conditions, or roughly seven times the range of 25-channel cordless phones.

In addition, the high frequency properties of 900 MHz DSS support a high-powered digital signal that enhances clarity better than competing cordless technologies. Rockwell's encoding of the digital signal ensures the highest level of security, while Casio PhoneMate's sophisticated SecureComtm voice scrambling technology makes eavesdropping virtually impossible. As a result of these technologies, the CP-850 delivers unsurpassed range, clarity and privacy. Casio PhoneMate worked closely with Rockwell to implement the intelligent power management capability, Rockwell's proprietary method of preserving cordless battery life to ensure clear communications at long range.

This breakthrough effectively compensates for the power consumptive nature of DSS technology. In the CP-850, the transmitting power between the handset and base unit automatically adjusts between one, ten and 100 milliamps, depending on the distance between them; power is minimized when the units are relatively near to one another, and boosted as the two are separated and require greater signal strength to maintain clear communications. The CP-850 features a high-resolution, two-line Supertwist Nematic LCD for Caller ID in the handset, which displays the caller's name and phone number (if service is available) and which can be read easily from virtually any angle. Implementing Type 2 Caller ID compatibility enables caller identification to work with Call Waiting, showing a second caller's name and number while the primary conversation is in progress.

The unit stores the last 60 incoming Caller ID records in non-volatile memory, affording permanent protection of Caller ID data. The user can scroll through these records to review incoming call information and press the send button to call back any selected party using the convenient "Display and Dial" feature. In addition, 20 of these Caller ID numbers can be transferred to individual autodial locations, effortlessly building a database of stored telephone numbers for quick dialing.

Other key features included in Casio PhoneMate's CP-850 include: reverse handset charging, to permit viewing of Caller ID information while the handset is in the base; illuminated keypad on handset; speakerphone in the base, enabling the user to answer a call without the handset; intercom/line conference, connecting the handset user, the base user and the caller; two-way page/intercom, which enables handset and base users to speak privately, with or without a call in progress; dialed number display; 20-number autodial; and wall mountability. The CP-850 is expected to retail for $199 at specialty consumer electronics stores beginning in December.
