Education Reno € Sparks € Tahoe The Averages SAT Scores For 1993 -1994 Glenn Hare Occupational Center This center provides alternative classes to high school students including electronics, computer aided design, business systems, advanced child development, printing and graphics, precision machining, horticulture and landscaping, building trades, fashion merchandising and culinary arts. Reno/Sparks/Tahoe is committed to quality education from kindergarten through post graduate studies at the University of Nevada,Reno. Occupational/vocation alprograms are also emphasized at the high school level, Truckee Meadows Community College and several private and occupational-specific colleges. This commitment is why UNR was ranked as one of "America's Best Colleges" by U.S.News and World Report (1994). In addition, the school district¹s SAT and A CT scores are among the best in the state and exceed the regional and national averages. The Washoe County School District serves nearly 45,752 students. Within the district, 2,624 certified teachers work in 54 elementary schools, 10 middle schools, 10 high schools and 2 special-needs schools. The school system expense per student is $4,026. The average teacher/student ratio is 24.5: 1 in the elementary grades with a 16: I ratio in first and second grades and 25: 1 in the secondary (intermediate) grades. (702) 348-0200. There are 30 private educational facilities in Washoe County. Within this total, 25 serve kindergarten students, 14 serve middle school students and 6 serve high school students. Career College of Northern Nevada Accredited by Career College Association, this trade and technical school provides specialized training in electronic technology, data processing, microcomputers, word processing and medical and legal of fice management. Morrison Business College This senior college, also accredited by Career College Association, specializes in business career-oriented programs including associate degrees in Business Administration, Legal Administration and Office Administration. (702) 323-4145. Sierra Nevada College This private liberal arts college is located in lncline Village, next to Lake Tahoe. It offers degree programs in more than 15 different fields, as well as offering continuing education programs, an acclaimed summer arts program and numerous courses at satellite campuses in Nevada. Sierra Nevada College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges and Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. (702) 831-1314. University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) The oldest of our state's two universities and only research institution, the campus in Reno was opened in 1885 as a land-grant institution. UNR is accredited by Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. There is a wide variety of programs offered by each of the fully accredited 11 colleges and schools including 70 bachelor's degrees,67 master' s programs,27 doctoral specialties, 3 EdD's, and I MD. Some of the colleges include: Engineering, Business Administration, Mining, Agriculture and School of Medicine. Also, the university has a fully accredited evening MBA program to accommodate full-time working students. Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) The Truckee Meadows Community College academic programs, which emphasize industrial technology, include Industrial Management Certificate, Applied technology courses, and Tech Prep/School courses. The college provides post-secondary and occupational opportunities in our area. Itsenrollment for credit is 9,320 students for a total of 15,520 credit and non credit students who enjoy the benefits of 27 accredited associate degree programs and 36 certificates of achievement which offer a variety of specific job training.
